Seal of Biliteracy
What is the Seal of Biliteracy?
The California State Seal of Biliteracy is an official recognition awarded to high school graduates who have demonstrated proficiency in English and at least one additional language. Established in 2011, this program aims to honor students’ linguistic abilities and promote multilingualism across the state.
Students who earn the Seal receive a gold insignia affixed to their high school diploma or transcript, signifying their achievement. To qualify, students must meet specific criteria, including:
English Proficiency
Achieved by completing all English language arts requirements for graduation with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, or by attaining qualifying scores on standardized assessments such as the CAASPP, SAT, AP, or IB exams.
Proficiency in Another Language
Demonstrated through passing a four-year high school course of study in the language with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, or by achieving qualifying scores on assessments like the AP Spanish Exam.
The Seal of Biliteracy not only acknowledges students’ dedication to language learning but also enhances their college and career prospects by certifying valuable communication skills in multiple languages.
